Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Once in a lifetime, if one is lucky, one so merges with sunlight and air and running water that whole eons, the eons that mountains and deserts know, might pass in a single afternoon.” For Chuck Volz, painting the landscape gets him closer to the place Thoreau describes: “Painting directly from nature demands being as present as possible through moments that are fleeting yet eternal. A good painting can take us to that place, make that connection.”
